It's Gerard Manley Hopkins' Birthday Party - And You're Invited!

01 July 2020

It's Gerard Manley Hopkins' birthday on Friday July 31st, and you are invited to his party: a crowd-sourced reading of his poetry over Zoom. You will be expected to bring a present: one Gerard Manley Hopkins poem, piece of prose or anecdote from his life, ready to share.

It's a bonus if you learn the poetry by heart, but it's enough that you are familiar with it. It could be a excerpt of a longer poem. You don't need prior knowledge or love of Hopkins or any particular poetic expertise. You don't need to understand what he is on about. All that is required is a willingness to get to know a bit of Hopkins and share it.

Please RSVP to birthdayparty@artfulscribe.co.uk and tell us what you want to read. If you are stuck for something to read, we are happy to suggest a piece.

The party will take place from 8pm with guests admitted from 7.30pm

The event is organized by Artfulscribe, and hosted by Matthew McNaught, a Southampton-based writer. The winner of the 2016 Fitzcarraldo Editions Essay Prize, he's written essays for N+1 magazine and is currently working on a book.

Note: the role of the organizors will be to curate an evening's worth of readings. If your suggested piece has already been chosen, we will discuss alternatives. Once the reading slots are filled, we may accept some non-reading guests.

This is the first event in an intended series of birthday parties to encourage engagement with a wealth of literary heritage and to celebrate great poets of the past.
