Surrealism

On Tuesday 12th March, Mayflower Creative Writers gathered at MAST Mayflower Studios to dive into Surrealism, a movement that has succeeded in freeing the imagination.

We looked at automatic writing of the magnetic field, Surrealist Juxtaposition, created by the unexpected grouping of opposing things, and the Exquisite Corpse, both bizarre and marvellous.

Our first writing task was to write five, easy-answer questions followed by the correct answers, tear them up and scatter them amongst the other writer’s slips, then choose five new pieces of paper randomly. Then we chose the one that empowered us the most.

Holly then shared a historical version of a female writing surrealist short fiction and then showed a video of contemporary surrealism. where the group discuss how Surrealism has been influenced by technology - the amplification of a microphone, the discourse of surrealism reaching more people.

For the final task, we had to flick the page, point to a word, write it down, and repeat until 20 words had been written in order. From this, we made couplets - creating 10 surreal couplets. The final challenge was to create a story using these 10 couplets in order.
